چکیده

This paper addresses the problem of determining the number of pure chemical components in a mixturebyapplying themaximumlikelihoodestimator (MLE)of intrinsicdimension.Theapplication here is to Raman spectroscopy data, although the method is general and can be applied to any type of data from a chemical mixture. We show that the MLE produces superior results compared to other methods on both simulated and real chemicalmixtures, and is accurate evenwhenminor components are present. Even if the signal-to-noise (SN) ratio is very low, accurate estimates can still be obtained by smoothing the data before applying the estimator, this approach is illustrated on two real datasets with high noise levels. Since the MLE is computed locally at every data point, we also show how the local estimates canbeused for other applications, such as segmenting the specimen intohomogeneous regions. Modified Maximum Likelihood Estimation in First-Order Autoregressive Moving Average Models with some Non-Normal Residuals

When modeling time series data using autoregressive-moving average processes, it is a common practice to presume that the residuals are normally distributed. However, sometimes we encounter non-normal residuals and asymmetry of data marginal distribution. Despite widespread use of pure autoregressive processes for modeling non-normal time series, the autoregressive-moving average models have le...

An EM Algorithm for Estimating the Parameters of the Generalized Exponential Distribution under Unified Hybrid Censored Data

The unified hybrid censoring is a mixture of generalized Type-I and Type-II hybrid censoring schemes. This article presents the statistical inferences on Generalized Exponential Distribution parameters when the data are obtained from the unified hybrid censoring scheme. It is observed that the maximum likelihood estimators can not be derived in closed form. The EM algorithm for computing the ma...

Estimating a Bounded Normal Mean Relative to Squared Error Loss Function

Let be a random sample from a normal distribution with unknown mean and known variance The usual estimator of the mean, i.e., sample mean is the maximum likelihood estimator which under squared error loss function is minimax and admissible estimator. In many practical situations, is known in advance to lie in an interval, say for some In this case, the maximum likelihood estimator...

Assessing variety mixture of continuous spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) on grain yield and flour quality in Northeast China

Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) variety mixtures represent a relatively unexplored avenue for maintaining yield and improving flour quality. A field experiment was conducted to examine the responses of three spring wheat varieties in pure variety and in variety mixtures under continuous cropping in Northeast China. Three modern spring wheat varieties, along with a three-variety mixture and a t...

Determination of the number of components in finite mixture distribution with Skew-t-Normal components

Abstract One of the main goal in the mixture distributions is to determine the number of components. There are different methods for determination the number of components, for example, Greedy-EM algorithm which is based on adding a new component to the model until satisfied the best number of components. The second method is based on maximum entropy and finally the third method is based on non...
